2022 Property Assessments on their way soon

Mar 15, 2022 | 9:46 AM

MEDICINE HAT — Property owners in Medicine Hat can expect to see their 2022 Assessment Notices in their mail boxes starting tomorrow.

They are mailed out earlier and under separate cover from Property Tax Notices, so residents have more time to respond and deal with individual assessment queries and concerns, before property tax payments are due.

The assessed value of a property is the basis for municipal taxes, as well as provincial education taxes and the Cypress View Foundation levy.

The assessments for the City of Medicine Hat are based on the market value of each property as of July 1 the previous year, and the condition of the property as of December 31 of the previous year.

Residents with concerns about their assessment should contact the Assessment Department at the City of Medicine Hat for an explanation, before filing an appeal.

Appeals must be received by the Clerk of the Assessment Review Board by May 24.

The annual tax rate is set by city council in April, and the tax notices are mailed out in May.

Tax payments are due on June 30 this year.

Property tax notices cannot be disputed after the appeal period ends in May.

That’s why it’s important for owners and buyers of properties to review the Assessment notices before the 60 day appeal period ends in May.
