‘A really difficult year’: Salvation Army sees rise in demand for services

Feb 15, 2022 | 6:24 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB- The Salvation Army says demand for their services is high, and they are seeing more, and more people in the city who are in need.

Captain David Dale said a lot of residents have been accessing their services in order to meet their basic needs.

“This year because of the financial state the country is in people are really struggling, and this year we have seen people coming for help with their utilities with rent, and different things and we pretty well are seeing a lot of people in our shelter, and it is a common problem that people are not able to make ends meet, so it has been a really difficult year,” he said.

Dale said even with government support programs like CERB, it has still put some in financial distress especially as tax season approaches.

“They are realizing now that there is an income tax that has to be paid now, that wasn’t taken out of the initial cheques so that’s kind of put people in a little more hardship this year,” he said.

With so much demand for their services right now, Dale said right they are in a good position to keep up with the demand thanks to community support and the support of outside organizations.

But Dale said with so much uncertainty, the organization continues to need all the support they can get.

“We want to continue our services and we have seen a lot of improvement in people’s circumstances, through the services and a lot of people encouraged through the help,” he said.

To donate to the Salvation Army, Dale said residents can donate in person at one of their Salvation Army locations. Donations can also be made online or through the mail.
