1960 ~ Phillip Bygrave ~ 2022
Phillip Mark Bygrave of Medicine Hat passed away on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at the age of 61 years. He leaves to cherish his memory three children, Daniel (Charmine) Thompson of Prince George, British Columbia, Dustin (Elizabeth Thomas) Bygrave and their children, Dominik Pilgrim and Romi Bygrave, all of Medicine Hat, and Angela (Jordan) Painter and their God children, Derrick and Amythyst of Medicine Hat; his parents, Joan Bygrave of Cambridge, Ontario and Phillip Robin (Diane) Hood; two brothers, Stephen Bygrave (Peggy Fetch) of Medicine Hat and Michael Bygrave (Betty Curtis) of Cambridge, Ontario; his sister, Robin-Lynn Lane (Larry Patey) of Cambridge, Ontario; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, George Bygrave, Richard Hood, and Harold Bygrave; one sister, Margaret Dawn Hood; and his step father, Ivan Bygrave. Phill was a man with many hats. He was a loving father who gave his children, and their friends, many words of wisdom, helping shape who they are today. He spent many years volunteering his time for The Medicine Hat Speedway, lining up the cars before each race, The Elks, working the Crown & Anchor during Stampede Week or the casino throughout the rest of the year, and selling BINGO tickets to fundraise for SALTA Gymnastics, AMAC, and Medicine Hat Minor Hockey. Throughout the years, you could even see him in the stampede parade throwing candy to the kids for the Firehall Theatre company. If you liked amature theatre, chances were that you saw Phill on the stage for either Medicine Hat Musical Theatre or Firehall Theatre. His theatre credits go as far back as 1997 in the One Acts, or being a dwarf in Snow White: A Pantomime; the last show you would have seen him in was Into The Woods as part of the chorus. Friends and family remember fondly of the “escape scene” in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, where Phill, as The Baker, pulled the bars apart while his cellmate was able to slip through. He helped out where he could during hockey games, from running the clock, to selling 50/50 tickets, or just hollering encouragement from the stands. He will be remembered for his booming laugh, and loud voice; for the jokes he told, and how he always made others feel welcome. He loved to fish, and had many spots around town that he knew he could visit without getting interrupted. He also knew all the best spots to find the best worms. In more recent years, you could often catch him downtown at the library mucking about with his friends, roaming the halls of the mall, or sitting in one of his various favourite spots so he could draw his face off. Whenever he saw you, he was always ready with a smile, a wave, a boisterous hello, and maybe even a big bear hug. He often sung karioke at the Cecil or the Mainliner, or joined the jam nights out at the Jar Bar or at The Royal. He was fortunate that he was able to see his son Daniel get married, to visit with his mother and siblings in Ontario, to walk his daughter Angela down the aisle, and to meet his granddaughter Romi before he passed away. A memorial service will take place at a later date. Those who wish to remember Phillip with a donation, may do so to a charity of your choice.
