1932 ~ Martha Gordon ~ 2022
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our mother, Martha Katherine Gordon (nee Rued), beloved wife of the late John Gordon and leaves to cherish her memory five children. She slipped away peacefully at Good Samaritan South Ridge Village in Medicine Hat, Alberta on Monday, January 10, 2022 with family by her side at the age of 89 years.
Martha was born on June 24, 1932 in Cold Lake, Alberta to Kristofer and Ragna Rued, immigrant parents from Norway, speaking only Norwegian until she went to school. After completing high school, she moved to Weyburn, Saskatchewan. where she started a career as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse. This is where she met and married the love of her life, John Leonard Gordon on October 18, 1952. Although many years passed by from the start of her career; dedication, perseverance, commitment, and a strong work ethic of our mother won out. She was a model of strength, determination and hard work her entire life that she, along with dad, lived by and instilled in us.
Mom and Dad lived in many cities, choosing Medicine Hat to retire. Travel took them to Norway, Mexico, Hawaii, as well as down east to PEI to name a few. Mom loved to garden and had an immaculate yard. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and knitting for many years. She never hesitated to proudly say she had 14 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren with two or more on the way in 2022.
Mom was predeceased by her parents, in-laws, a nephew, brother-in-law Herb Gordon, and sister-in law Shirley Gordon. Her loving husband of 57 years, John passed in 2009, leaving her to love and cherish her children/grandchildren: Joanne (Ken) Cosgrove – Adam (Dawn), Scott (Noel) and Blake (Kym); Maxine (Paul) Werrell – Patricia (Keith), Cameron (Erin), Damon (Jenn), Charmaine (Chad); Boyd (Sandy) – Lindsay (Troy), Krisit-lee (Mike); Heather (Richard) Summersgill -John (Darcie), Jilysa (Jason), Jenni-Lee (Ryan); Debi (Trevor) Kenny – Brett, Taylor (Guy) plus all of her great grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mac, Roy and Colleen, and Helene Gordon, as well as numerous relatives here and in Norway and many cherished friends.
As per mom’s wishes, she will be cremated and laid to rest with dad. A celebration of Martha’s life will be held at a later date. in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alberta Lung Association – specify COPD.
