More than 1,000 COVID patients in hospital, Alberta health minister tests positive

Alberta has an additional 185 COVID patients in hospital over the weekend, pushing hospitalizations over 1,000 while ICU admissions approach 100.

There are now 1,007 Albertans in hospital with COVID-19, 94 of which are in ICU, and 3,403 deaths.

An AHS spokesperson told CHAT News Friday that there are eight COVID inpatients in Medicine Hat, two of whom are in the ICU.

There are currently 34 COVID-19 positive inpatients in the South Zone with three of those in the ICU. In addition to the Medicine Hat patients, Chinook Regional Hospital has 21 inpatients with one in the ICU. Brooks Health Centre has three inpatients.

There are 72,368 active cases in the province, up 8,239 since the Friday update, and 376,610 recovered cases in the province, up 7,624.

Alberta’s total cases from the start of the pandemic is 452,381.

There are 15,886 new cases confirmed in the province since Friday.

With the province limiting testing in the fifth wave, these confirmed cases do not accurately reflect the number of cases in the province.

The province completed 42,622 tests in the past 24 hours.

The positivity rate is about 37.3 per cent.

Alberta has administered 8,071,666 doses of vaccine at the latest update.

Only a preliminary update is has been posted on the provincial website as of 4:30 p.m. Alberta Health Services has said the full data for the weekend will be included in Tuesday’s update.

Meanwhile, Alberta Health Minister Jason Copping revealed he tested positive for COVID-19 and is isolating at home.
