Christmas Bird Count coming up soon

Dec 14, 2021 | 9:52 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Bird-loving volunteers are wanted to help with the annual Medicine Hat Christmas Bird Count this weekend.

People with bird feeders in their yards are encouraged to take part on Dec. 19.

“Every year citizen scientists across North America make this, the longest-running wildlife survey in the world, happen,” states a release from the Medicine Hat Interpretive Program. “Feeder watchers are an important component of the count because they often observe a few species not found by territory surveyors within our area’s count circle.”

The interpretive program notes that to participate as a feeder watcher, you must be able to identify bird species.

Anyone interested should contact the Police Point Park Nature Centre before the count to get a form to keep track of what they see and learn the proper way to do the count. Your final count should be reported to the Nature Centre by phone or email.

Organizers advise this can be an excellent activity for parents or grandparents to do with kids.

Any Hatters who want to participate in the count can contact the Nature Line at 403-529-6225. Staff are available Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Details about the count can be found on the Birds Canada website.
