Ward 9 byelection to be held Feb. 7

DUNMORE, AB — Cypress County council has set a date for a byelection in Ward 9.

The seat was held by the late Alf Belyea until his death just days before the municipal election in October.

Council has set Monday, Feb. 7 as the date for the byelection.

Returning officer Sean Rooney says the nomination period is now open, and candidates have until noon on Jan. 10 to file their papers.

“The gist of it is you’ve got to get five people to vouch for you, to fill = in your nomination papers and there’s a $100 deposit that has to be made,” says Rooney.

The forms can be found at the Cypress County website.

To be eligible to run, potential candidates must have been a resident of Ward 9 for six months, and understand the expectations of a county councillor.

An advance poll has also been fixed for Saturday, Feb. 5 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Suffield Community Hall.

That’s also the location for the regular vote on Feb. 7, 2022.

Fire control order

In other county news, the current weather patterns in southeastern Alberta have enabled Cypress County to lift the current fire control order.

In a release, the county says fire permits are once again being issued.

Extreme caution should always be maintained, ensuring that all of the conditions outlined on the Fire Permit are being adhered to, and all permitted burning must be supervised by an adult at all times.
