Potential hazard from deer in Medicine Hat: Alberta Environment

Nov 26, 2021 | 5:57 PM

Alberta Environment is warning mating season is underway for deer in the region and more of the animals could end up proving as an obstacle on area roads and highways.

With their ramped up activities, the deer are more frequently in the public eye, and they aren’t paying as much attention to their surroundings right now.

“We often see an increase in deer and vehicle collisions because of rutting activity so it’s a good reminder for (motorists) to keep eyes out on the local roads and highways because the deer are much more wary at this time of year,” said Joel Nicholson, senior wildlife biologist with Alberta Environment and Parks.

Nicholson also says people shouldn’t feed deer, as it would only make the animals feel more comfortable around humans, posing a risk to both deer and people.

He adds the Medicine Hat area is popular with deer partially because of it’s location in a river valley.
