1946 ~ Elgin Hornung ~ 2021

Elgin Lawrence Hornung passed away on Tuesday , November 2, 2021 at the age of 74 years, beloved husband of Sylvia Hornung of Medicine Hat. He also leaves to cherish his memory three children, Rocky Hornung (Coralee Tjeerdema), Rhonda (Tony) Saba and Ryan (Christine) Hornung all of Medicine Hat; six grandchildren, Destin, Camri, Audrey, Lincoln, Kinsley and Gracelyn; his brother, Randy (Nola) Hornung; three sisters, Lorraine (Vic) Baron, Sandra Hornung and Marion (Stu) Warrener as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Mary and Lawrence Hornung; his brother, Keith and sister, Geraldine. Elgin was born on November 11, 1946 in Vanguard, Saskatchewan. He was the first son born to Lawrence and Mary Hornung. They lived on a farm a few miles south of Glen Bain. He loved to farm. He started driving at the age of six. He preferred work to school and completed his grade ten which was the minimum requirement to begin a trade. In 1962, he enrolled at SIAST in Saskatoon in Farm Machinery but discovered the class was full. The welding class was not so he chose that. He apprenticed in Weyburn, Saskatchewan and found his way to Calgary where by July of 1967, he received his welding apprenticeship certificate.

Elgin met Sylvia on a blind date at the Redcliff Drive-in the fall of 1966. The date was set up by Elgin’s sister who became friends with Sylvia that same year at McCoy High School. They were married on April 20, 1968 at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Medicine Hat. Elgin and Sylvia had their first child (Rocky) on January 2, 1969. Those early years were a struggle but through hard work and the support of family and friends, Elgin eventually ended up working at Kurt’s Iron Works. The second of three children (Rhonda) was born on December 30,1970.

In the summer of 1976, Elgin and Sylvia decided that they wanted to start their own Welding business but they did not know where. By this time, they had their third and final child Ryan who was born on March 6, 1976. Elgin loaded up the family in a motorhome and drove across Canada looking for a new city to live and start a business. Despite seeing some great places that summer, Elgin and Sylvia decided to open up a welding shop back where they started in Medicine Hat. On November 1, 1976, Dynamic Welding Crafts Ltd. opened for business. Dynamic Welding was in operation for 30 years and proved very successful allowing Elgin and Sylvia to retire in 2006. Elgin ensured that post-retirement his garage was stock-piled with a tool for almost any kind of renovation. And boy did he and Sylvia renovate. In addition to renovating their own homes over the years, there isn’t a family member or relative who doesn’t have a story of Elgin showing up upon request or even unannounced to help with handi-work of some kind. He could always be relied upon to show up to help.

Elgin enjoyed retirement and loved spending time at Buffalo Pound, Saskatchewan where they owned a cabin for a number of years and where they routinely visited close friends and siblings. Elgin loved family. He especially loved travelling with and/or otherwise visiting Marion and Stu, Lorraine and Vic, Randy and Nola and, of course, his children and grandchildren.

A private family funeral service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Saturday, November 6, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. Due to the restrictions brought forward by the Chief Medical Officer of Health, indoor public gatherings are to be kept to 50 people. Masks are mandatory. The service will be live streamed, and family and friends who are unable to attend are invited to watch the service by searching for the Pattison Funeral Home Youtube page.
