National Day of Truth and Reconciliation

Saskatchewan to lower flags at government buildings on Sept. 30

Sep 28, 2021 | 1:40 PM

The Saskatchewan government says it will observe the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation by lowering flags on government buildings to half-mast and placing orange lights throughout the legislature grounds.

It encourages everyone to wear orange on Thursday to generate discussion and raise awareness of the history of residential schools in Canada.

Don McMorris, minister of First Nations, Métis and northern affairs, says the government remains committed to work with Indigenous Peoples toward cultural and economic reconciliation.

The NDP Opposition would like the province to do more by recognizing the day as a holiday so that people can get paid time off, but the Saskatchewan Party says it’s meant to be a statutory holiday only for federal employees.
