‘Not trying to be mean’: food establishments adapt to vaccine Restrictions Exemption Program

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The province’s proof of vaccination program is now in effect and business owners and residents are adapting to the new rules.

Businesses and venues must ask for proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test if they want to operate without all the health restrictions.

Many business owners say they have no choice. It’s either implement the Restrictions Exemption Program or have many limitations put on their operations. If restaurants that don’t participate can only serve up to six people from the same household outside.

Implementing the new rules comes with challenges.

Rosewood Bistro owner Sourav Saha says he’s dealing with a lot of hate. Not only are people mad online, but he says they’ve come to his restaurant to yell at him.

Saha says the alternative to not asking for proof of vaccines, would be shutting his business down.

“I’m not trying to be mean or rude to anybody, I respect everybody and I need all of your business,” Saha said. “Let me open it for the people who can come in and others can always do takeout or delivery so that way we can serve everybody and we’ll make the food with the same love and respect that we make the food for people who come in here.”

Several other food establishments across the area have mixed reactions. Some are mad and frustrated they must show proof of vaccination, while others now feel a sense of relief.

One business CHAT News went to didn’t ask for proof of vaccination. Whereas a couple of fast food places have closed their dining rooms completely and are only offering takeout or drive-thru service.

Another fast food place is allowing residents to dine in, but do require proof of vaccination.

One employee said she and her co-workers have received a lot of backlash. They’ve been yelled at and threatened with lawsuits.

Many businesses and staff are asking for people to treat each other with kindness as everyone does their best to navigate these challenging times.
