1920 – Edna Caswell 2021
Edna Ann Caswell, beloved wife of the late Albert “Ted” Caswell, passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Home on Sunday, July 18, 2021 at the age of 100 years. She lived in her home until the fall of 2017, when she reluctantly moved to the Bow Island Seniors Home for six months before settling at the River Ridge in Medicine Hat for her last three years. A special thank you to the Bow Island Seniors Home and River Ridge. She really appreciated being treated so well. Edna was predeceased by her parents Alma and Axel Mattson; her husband Ted on May 8, 2008; three brothers, Erling (Martha) Mattson, Harold (Margaret) Mattson, Chester Mattson and one sister Ruth (Mike) Bohnet. Although Ted and Edna had no children of their own, she is lovingly remembered by many nephews, nieces and a special neighbor Liz Hyland Worley. Edna was born at White Sulpur Springs, Montana on August 28, 1920; she then moved to Orion with her family where she was raised and educated. Edna enjoyed helping neighbors at threshing time, and cooking for the big crews they needed. She then went to work for Chay Gilchrist for almost two years, first at the Cross Z Ranch and then at the Lost River Ranch. Following that she came home and cooked for the Sabin Gogolinski family. On July 2, 1942 she came to Bow Island, thanks to her last teacher, Muriel Rolefson who encouraged her to move there. She enjoyed working at the Myrtle Hotel for Mrs. Ridgedale, who treated her so well. Edna married Ted Caswell on November 18, 1944, at the Fifth Avenue United Church in Medicine Hat. Together they farmed one year on the Caswell farm north of Bow Island, until Ted’s older brother, Ernest, came home after the war. Ted managed a service station for Harry Hines until they bought their own land and started farming again. They enjoyed the mixed farm until 1974, when they sold it. Edna was honored to be a Life Member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Royal Canadian Legion. Her comment: “Bow Island is a good place to live”. Edna enjoyed gardening, baking, curling, carpet bowling and of course her painting. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday, July 28th from 12:30 – 1:25 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. with Life Celebrant, Pat Grisonich. Everyone is welcome to attend. The service will be live streamed, and family and friends who are unable to attend are invited to watch the service by searching for the Pattison Funeral Home Youtube page. The video will go live 10 minutes prior to service time and will remain on the youtube page for future viewing. Interment will follow in the Prairie View Cemetery.
