1921 – Martha Hauck – 2021
Martha Katherine Hauck of Medicine Hat, passed away on Sunday, July 11, 2021, two months short of her 100th birthday. Martha was one of seven children born into an immigrant family who homesteaded in Southern Saskatchewan. She was the last surviving member of her family. She earned a Teaching Certificate and taught for over 30 years at various locations in Alberta and Saskatchewan before retiring in 1978, while remaining active in St. Patrick’s Parish and the C.W.L. She lived a quiet and peaceful life, but was active in many community groups, and enjoyed curling and travelling. Not long after each of her trips, “slide night at Martha’s” followed and she shared memories of her travels. She lived at St. Joseph’s Home for many years where again, she expanded her circle of friends. Her St. Joe’s family was a great source of pleasure and comfort to her.
Although she never married or had children, Martha developed a large family around her. Her family included the many friends she met over the years and at least two families were fortunate enough to have her sponsor and support them as they moved to Canada. Although those acts were carried out many years ago, those who were affected continue to be grateful for her kindness.
Closest to Martha’s heart were her 16 nieces and nephews. Each one of them benefitted from her wisdom, kindness, sharp wit and incredible memory. She was always happy to share with them and always welcomed a call, card, letter or visit from them. Family and friends are welcome to attend the memorial service that will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 24, 2021 with Fr. Roque Pereira Celebrant. The service will be live streamed, and family and friends who are unable to attend are invited to watch the service by searching for the Pattison Funeral Home Youtube page. The video will go live 10 minutes prior to service time and will remain on the youtube page for future viewing. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. In keeping with Martha’s wishes in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Home, the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter or your local Food Bank.
