Watchdog calls rate of child sexual abuse in Nunavut a crisis
IQALUIT — Nunavut’s representative for children and youth says the territory’s high rate of child sexual abuse amounts to a crisis.
Jane Bates testified this week before legislature members to discuss her office’s 2019-2020 annual report.
The Arctic Children and Youth Foundation says Nunavut youth experience abuse at a rate 10 times the national average. And Nunavut’s Family Services Department says there are 416 registered sex offenders in the territory — 209 committed offences against children.
Bates said Nunavut’s family services minister receives two disclosures of child sexual abuse a week. In a year, that amounts to 104 reports. Bates also said that many cases go unreported.
