My first mentor, Benita Stafford-Smith – the person that I credit with getting me on track 10 years ago joined me on the radio show on her semi-annual return home from her cool (but warm!) life in the Middle East. She educated us on some surprising cultural differences (and similarities).

Also Tony Esteeves shared some of his adventures – like taking off to bike across Canada to only 2 days of notice. Yikes – now that is saying YES! Tony reminded us how everyone around us is resourceful and we can make such gains tapping into the unexpected connections that life brings our way if we just remain open.

Tony’ Tip – EAT Well
E.A.T. is an acronym that I use to teach people to take advantage of unexpected connections. Unexpected connections are the serendipitous encounters and conversations that have shaped your life.
The E stands for recognizing that EVERYONE around you is resourceful. The A stands for ASK for help and the T stands for TRY new things.
When you approach your external world with a sense of curiosity and playfulness it becomes quickly easy to see how everyone around you really is resourceful. Just having conversations with the people who you encounter throughout your day – including strangers – can open doors to new opportunities and very exciting experiences. Be disciplined not to become too immersed and distracted with your technology, and be sure to be present with the people who are gifting you with their “real world” companionship.
One element around ASKING for help that is quite useful involves reporting back to the person who has helped you. Be sure to let them know what actions you took based on their advice. When you let your mentor, friend or colleague know how you’ve taken their advice, often they will be very interested to offer you further help. This becomes a virtuous cycle that can benefit both parties involved.
Trying new things has taken me on international adventures and advanced my professional development. You just need to start doing the activities that you’ve always been meaning to do for this to work. Once you TRY that new activity, sport, job, study, project, (fill in your blank), you gain access to people who have new ideas and perspectives. You will connect with people who’s values are in line with the way that you would like to live your life. When you align with these people, naturally you bring yourself closer to your ideal life.
So E.A.T. well, take care of yourself and enjoy making your unexpected connections.
