Two members of Alberta Premier Jason Kenney’s cabinet criticize him on COVID actions

EDMONTON — Two members of Alberta Premier Jason Kenney’s cabinet are openly criticizing him for actions surrounding COVID-19.

Rajan Sawhney and Leela Aheer are taking Kenney to task for refusing to apologize for photos that appear to show Kenney and others ignoring COVID rules while enjoying drinks and dinner on the penthouse patio of a building by the legislature grounds.

Aheer, the minister for culture and multiculturalism, wrote on Facebook that Kenney should apologize, adding that the photos must be disappointing to see for people who have been following the rules.

Sawhney, the minister for social services, said in a radio interview with RED-FM in Calgary that she has been trying to follow the COVID rules and would never have attended such an event.

On Friday, UCP member and deputy speaker Angela Pitt said it’s clear Kenney’s dinner party broke COVID rules and said she understands why such hypocrisy would bother Albertans.

Kenney has repeatedly said they did not break the rules, explaining they were under the maximum attendance limit — but he has not addressed the criticism that the dinner violated mask and distancing rules.
