Damaging trees

Beavers to be removed from Connaught Pond area

May 5, 2021 | 1:27 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Beavers causing significant damage at Connaught Pond will be trapped and removed, says the city.

The city says damage is being done to desirable tree species in the surrounding and nearby areas, which is leaving the opportunity for invasive species to overtake the area.

In natural settings, including rivers, beavers are a part of the natural balance and provide many positives to the environment, says the city. However, Connaught Pond is a man-made location.

The city will be placing signs by the pond when staff are in the area. Residents are asked to stay away from the areas while the signs are up.

Trees in known beaver locations will be wrapped to decrease the need to remove beavers. Wrap in this location was difficult due to the size of these trees, says the city.

This control method began May 4 and should be finished by May 19.
