MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Mavericks are opting out of the 2021 Western Canadian Baseball League season, the team announced this morning.

“Knowing this will be the second summer without Mavericks Baseball in Medicine Hat, it has been an extremely difficult decision,” says Mavericks owner and general manager Greg Morrison in a release. “The rise in COVID-19 cases and increased health restrictions make it very challenging to foresee a summer with fan and sponsor involvement. This will be tough on our fans, staff, and players, but is the best choice to protect the long-term viability of the Mavericks organization.”

The boys of summer won’t be swinging the sticks in the league, but they will still be on the field.

The club will turn its focus to grassroots baseball development, says Morrison.

“The silver lining for us is that we can continue to coach 8- to 18-year-old athletes throughout the summer months. Working with young athletes is a great opportunity to develop skills. We appreciate that families have chosen us to provide quality baseball instruction.”

The Mavericks are looking forward to returning to the WCBL and Athletic Park in 2022.

If the team was to play in this season games would have been at Jefferies Park. Renovations are taking place at Athletic Park this summer and fall.
