City’s 2020 snow removal slightly over budget

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The City of Medicine Hat has shifted from snow removal to street sweeping this month.

As for the snow removal, the city was over budget this last year.

Craig Maunder, operations engineer with the city says the budget is split over two years.

The city was slightly over budget for 2020 but was able to compensate the funds with other construction activities in the department.

And with a mild winter for the first part of 2021, he says the budget is tracking well.

“The total budget is about $1.7 million dollars for 2020 and 2021 is pretty close to that. So right now for 2021 we’re sitting about that $500,000 mark so about a third of the budget and we’re halfway through the year so looking very positive there.”

Street sweeping also started in the city.

Crews finished school zones last week and continue to work on main roads.

Right now, the city is running two crews. One for the day and one in the night for boulevards, islands, and bridges.

Residential areas will start on April 26. Crews will be out between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Maunder says they’re slated to finish sweeping in mid-June.
