Parents encouraged to send feedback on new K-6 Curriculum

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Alberta government released a new kindergarten to Grade 6 education curriculum draft yesterday.

It will focus on four pillars – literacy, numeracy, citizenship and practical skills.

Heather McCaig, a district representative for the Alberta Teachers Association, says it’s not age-appropriate content.

She says the draft expects students to compare global pandemics in Grade 2, a curriculum that is currently taught in Grade 10.

McCaig also expresses concerns about the sheer volume and diversity in the new content.

“It comes across without a lot of voices of people we have in Alberta currently,” McCaig said, adding the curriculum needs to include those voices, something the draft doesn’t do. “We really need people to be giving feedback on those surveys.”

McCaig says educators will be vocal about their concerns, but it’s the parent’s voices who will really make an impact.

Medicine Hat Catholic Superintendent Dwayne Zarichny is still looking through the lengthy draft.

He understands the frustrations of parents and educators. A proper curriculum is important as it sets the foundation for a student’s education.

Zarichny stresses the importance those who are unhappy giving feedback.

“If there’s a positive take away from any of this, it’s that having parents so deeply involved in this discussion is a great thing,” Zarichny said. “There’s lots of opportunity right now at this phase of curriculum development really is about gathering feedback.”

Some classrooms across the province will test the new curriculum in September.

You can submit your feedback until Spring of 2022. Details can be found here.
