Man charged in Red Deer doctor’s death faces new mental health review

Mar 22, 2021 | 3:23 PM

A man facing a trial in the killing of a family doctor at a Red Deer medical clinic is facing another review of his mental health.

Deng Mabiour, who is 54, was initially deemed fit to stand trial on a charge of first-degree murder after Dr. Walter Reynolds was killed at the Village Mall Walk-In Clinic on August 10, 2020.

But in a video appearance in Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench Monday afternoon, court was told that Mabiour would be the subject of an Alberta Review Board hearing on Wednesday to assess him further.

It was also revealed that Mabiour attended an appointment at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary last Friday for a “serious medical condition.”

Mabiour, appearing Monday by CCTV from the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Centre, said little during his appearance except to confirm he still intends to represent himself at his trial, which is scheduled for November.

He will be back in court after his assessment on April 14.

Justice Paul Belzil indicated to court that he was unsure of what to make of a doctor’s letter regarding Mabiour’s mental fitness to stand trial, in addition to his physical condition.

“I’m wondering whether it would be appropriate to have the Crown write to him, to ask whether or not that is an outstanding issue here,” said Belzil. “He was assessed at the provincial court level, found fit to stand trial, but that may no longer be the situation. I think we need to sort that out.”
