Nadia was born in the village Buruldai, Kyrgyz Republic, USSR, on January 12, 1953. She was the 8th oldest from a family of 19 children. Seven children before her died while Nadia was a child and starting with her all 11 siblings lived. She and Vladimir Shagin were married on June 24, 1973 in Frunze, Kyrgyz Republic, USSR and had 4 children there. They moved to Izmail, Ukraine in 1978 where 5 more children were born. The youngest son Paul was born in 1989 during their immigration journey in Austria. Nadia and Vladimir arrived in Canada with their 10 children in June 1990 to Bow Island, AB where New Life Fellowship Church warmly welcomed them. Later they made their home in Medicine Hat.
Nadia deeply cared for and loved her children. She played her guitar and sang with her children especially when they were little bringing much joy. She was always ready to listen and give timely advice pointing to Jesus. She loved to host large family gatherings inviting anyone that may have needed a warm meal and lots of love and prayers. Nadia daily lived up to her name, which in Russian means HOPE. In her presence many found comfort, peace and the courage to never give up. She loved the Lord and devoted her life to sharing His love with those around her, especially with those who were alone. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church which she attended faithfully. Nadia worked for Redi Enterprises for 5 years. Even with a family of 10 she managed to finish a course in Massage Therapy and worked as a massage therapist at Green Tree store in Medicine Hat for a number of years. She also studied and received a diploma of a Natural Health Consultant. She was always learning about medicine. Nadia was a constant support to her husband Vladimir and his hobby as a builder.
Nadia was a strong woman who faced many struggles throughout life, but she handled challenges with such humility and grace. Much of her care and attention went to her youngest child Paul who was born with Down Syndrome. She received him as a gift and a blessing from the Lord. Paul made his parents and siblings laugh a lot even though he had many health challenges. Nadia was always very generous with her time and finances. She loved to bless people in need with the little she had. She had a gentle, yet very strong soprano singing voice and a refined faith. The way she lived her life was testament to her love for God, her family, her children and grandchildren. Her daily desire was to bring glory to the Lord in all she does and says.
Mom, we are going to miss your strong yet gentle spirit, your warm embrace and the love you showed to everyone you met, especially the lonely ones without families and people with special needs. You lived your life with heaven in mind. Mom we are going to miss so many things about you; the delicious meals and piroshki you prepared for your family and friends, the homemade sauerkraut you’d make together with Dad each fall and bless each child’s family with a jar, your unconditional love, the way you would hold your grandchildren and smother them in kisses saying “Love you, Love you, Love you” in your sweet gentle voice. The way you would daily pray making sure to say each child and grandchild by name and a special prayer for every member of the family. Our hearts are heavy with our loss here on this earth, but we find great comfort and peace knowing you are at home in Heaven. Thank you for the legacy you have left through your faith, prayers, witness and example. Thank you for giving us each other. We are forever grateful to the Lord for you.
A Special thanks to Dr. Jonker for his years of special care for Nadia, the amazing staff and friends at Heritage Heights with whom mom loved to sing hymns, as well as the home care staff and staff at St. Joseph’s home for the outstanding care they gave to mom during her final weeks and the emotional support they provided for the family.
