Gun control legislation misleading Canadians says MP Motz

Feb 17, 2021 | 4:45 PM

Nine months after it was promised, the federal government laid out new gun control legislation on Tuesday this week.

It would allow municipalities to ban handguns through bylaws restricting their possession, storage, and transportation.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the measures will be backed up with serious penalties to enforce these bylaws, including jail time for people who violate municipal rules.

MP for Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner Glen Motz says this is a misguided approach and will do nothing to improve public safety.

“They’re going to say municipalities, you can now deal with a bylaw to prohibit handguns in your city and put some strings around that. So criminals who aren’t afraid of the criminal code already, are going to be afraid of a bylaw, are you kidding me?”

Motz says the issue we have in this country is smuggled firearms and the use of illegal firearms by criminals.

Adding that Canada’s law-abiding gun owners are not the problem.

Motz says there are already hefty penalties for those who do not follow the law and this bill does nothing to protect Canadians in our communities who are dealing with gun violence.

“This is lazy government, where they’re downloading responsibility from the federal government to the municipalities. It’s wrong and will continue to be wrong,” Motz told Chat News.

Mayor Ted Clugston also spoke about the gun legislation during council last night, “We’re an Alberta municipality in a relativity rural neighbourhood and area. I’d be amazed if we ever weighted into that (gun bylaw).”

The bill also proposes a buy-back of a wide array of recently banned firearms the government considers assault-style weapons.

Motz adds the bill has not been presented in the House yet, but they have an uphill climb, as both the Bloc Quebecois and the NDP are very supportive of a gun ban.
