Support services being affected by COVID-19 situation at CFB Suffield

Nov 23, 2020 | 11:06 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Canadian Forces is not confirming there are active cases of COVID-19 at CFB Suffield but social media posts associated with the base indicate there are cases and the situation is having an effect on support services.

Posts on the CFB Suffield & BATUS Medical Centre Facebook account attributed to senior medical officer Rhys Williams states there are at least two UK personnel with confirmed cases of COVID-19. A since-deleted post on the Facebook site indicated there were more cases – including at least one Department of National Defence worker.

Williams has also posted that individuals living on the base, in Ralston, Redcliff and Medicine Hat have been identified as close contacts with confirmed cases have been directed to isolate and are being tested.

A post on the BATUS General Fund Facebook page states the operation which provides goods and services to British Army personnel on the base will be closed for the next two weeks, “due to the local COVID measures.”

The CFB Suffield Military Family Resource Centre Facebook page states, “in light of the current situation in CFB Suffield,” the centre will be operating at reduced hours, its Kids Connection service will be closing effective immediately and it’s Kiddie Kare will be operating at reduced hours.”

In a statement provided late Friday, the Canadian Forces states it – as well as the British military – do not provide COVID-19 numbers affecting personnel at the local level. The statement goes on to say they rigorously apply public health measures concerning the virus as well as additional risk mitigation as required.
