CFSEA doles out more Emergency Community Support Fund money

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The second round recipients for the Emergency Community Support Fund that the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta it administers for the federal government has been announced.

More than $150,000 is being divvied up between 12 community groups.

Chinook Village is getting the largest chunk, receiving nearly $40,000.

Linda Hygard, managing director at the seniors residence, says the money will cover 13.5 hours of cleaning per day for the next five months.

“We have to sanitize high-touch areas three times a day. So all of the common areas have to be sanitized three times a day, as well as resident rooms,” she said. “That is all in addition to our current cleaning protocols. This is all extra sanitizing just due to COVID.”

As a licensed but not publicly-funded not-for-profit, the money is particularly welcome now.

“We want to keep our seniors as safe as possible we will do whatever it takes but … as a not-for-profit charity it’s a struggle so we’re totally appreciative of this money,” said Nygard.

Sue Edwards, executive director of the CFSEA, explains the money is part of the $50 million federal government distributed this past summer. Community Foundations Canada, Canadian Red Cross and United Way Canada are the recipients to funnel the money through to their communities.

“In total, at the end of this year, for the Medicine Hat area Community Foundation of Southeast Alberta will have distributed $516,460 to the area,” she said.
