Virtual Remembrance Day service for Medicine Hat Catholic schools

Nov 10, 2020 | 3:21 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat Catholic schools have created a virtual Remembrance Day service for November 11.

The 20-minute video incorporates 7 of the 9 schools.

It features band, poetry, choir, and drama performances by students.

There’s also a moment of silence and The Last Post is played by a grade 9 student.

Communications coordinator Derrian Hallas says the Base Commander from CFB Suffield makes an address as well.

She says schools still wanted to acknowledge the significant day.

Hallas says it’s a really neat piece and different than anything they’ve done before.

“I’m just incredibly proud of our students. They are so resilient, they wear their masks and sing their hearts out and it’s really such a beautiful piece.”

She hopes parents can sit down with their kids and watch it on Remembrance Day, in lieu of the celebrations they can’t attend in person.

“The idea behind this as well wasn’t just to engage our staff and students, but also our parents because our parents really miss being in the buildings. They want to see their kids perform, they want to see their son and daughter in the band. So this was kind of a way to get us all together while being fully together,” Hallas said.

The video will be shared with parents via email on Tuesday, November 10, and made public on MHCBE social media pages on November 11.

Participating schools include St. Louis, St. Francis Xavier, Mother Teresa, École St. John Paul II, St. Michael’s, St. Mary’s, and Monsignor McCoy.

Hallas says they’ve been planning Remembrance Day since September and started filming in October.

She adds students watched the video in their classrooms on November 6.
