1941 ~ Joyce Risling ~ 2020
Joyce Janette Risling of Medicine Hat died peacefully surrounded with love and prayers on October 4, 2020, (the Feast of St. Francis) at the age of 79 years. Beloved wife of 60 years to Jack Risling, devoted mom to their four children, and deeply loved by her nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren: Sherry (Henry) Curtis and their children, Travis Curtis, Tessa Curtis (children Mataya, Izaya, Jacob, Ariah) Jelena Komanchuk; Kim Bennett and her children Amanda (Patrick) Wallace (children William, Euphoria, Elijah, Xanthe) Kodi Ukaluchuk; Robert (Helena) Risling and their children, Amelia (Joel) Mackie (children Olivia and Owen) Derrick Risling, Isaac Risling, Isabella Risling; Siblings Merle Meyer, Barry Meyer, Pam Meyer, Wendy Meyer, Wanda Forster as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Joyce was predeceased by her son Rodney, parents Herbert and Alice Meyer, and sister Shirley Akerstrom.
Joyce loved to tell stories and would often tell the story regarding her birth. She was born on a farm in a home converted from a granary, rather than the hospital in Medicine Hat. When telling the story she would say with much chagrin, that because her dad promised her mom that if she had the baby on the farm, he would buy her a new kitchen suite, she now has Hilda Alberta listed as the place of birth on her birth certificate. Joyce married the love of her life Jack in 1960, they resided in Medicine Hat for most of their marriage apart from two years in Winnipeg Manitoba, where the twins Rodney and Robert were born. Joyce worked at the Redcliff Glass Factory for 18 years and maintained many close friendships long after the factory closure. Joyce loved reading and was always active, she loved to garden, play ball (back catcher) in an organized league in her youth and as a young mother, have foot races with her kids and sew Barbie clothes for her daughter’s dolls to name a few. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and teaching them how to bake things from scratch. She was fiercely loyal to her family and Church and spent her life helping to serve their needs. In 1962 Joyce was baptized in the Roman Catholic Church, she was deeply devoted too and loved our Lord Jesus and our Lady, she read scripture daily and prayed countless rosaries, novenas and chaplets for her family, friends and the world (if she knew you she was praying for you). She was a true servant of Jesus Christ.
