Traps set to catch cats in Crescent Heights sewer drain

Medicine Hat, AB – The Medicine Hat Fire Department is trying to help some cats trapped in north-east Crescent Heights.

Traps are being set right inside the drain in hopes of catching a mother cat and her kittens.

It is believed they have been down there since mid-February.

Prior attempts to rescue the cats have been unsuccessful.

It’s possible they are hiding inside a 12″ pipe at the bottom of the drain, but the fire department says accessing the pipe is challenging because it’s too small for any equipment to fit in.

Platoon Chief Kevin Heinrich understands people want to help these cats, but says it’s best to leave it to the professionals.

“We don’t want to rescue any people from here for the cats,” explained Heinrich. “Obviously, we care about the cats, but we care about people more, so the best idea is to stay away. We will keep checking and we’ll see what options are available to us and hopefully, they’ll come out for us one day.”

Firefighters will be checking the traps periodically and once the cats are caught, they will be taken to APARC.
