‘People just fly’: Ranchlands residents calling on motorists to slow down

Jul 27, 2020 | 2:19 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB- Residents in the Ranchlands neighbourhood are fed up with speedy drivers and are asking motorists to slow down.

The area houses many families with young children who are eager to play outside.

“All our kids don’t really have backyards at the condos, and they want to be outside playing , and riding their bikes and we are out watching them, and put the fear in them to stay off the road, but this main road is busy and there are a lot of speeders,” said resident Carmen Brudevold.

Residents in the area have even taken matters into their own hands, posting signs urging people to slow down.

For Brudevold, speedy drivers are a significant concern for her with her young son suffering from hearing loss.

“He does hear but some things are distorted or delayed. So he knows not to go on the street but I still worry that he might not hear a car quick enough, it just gives me that extra concern,” she said.

The issue of speeding, according to residents varies depending on the time of day.

“ Early in the morning, even getting them in the vehicle, say to start going to school again is really busy or around 4 p.m. or 5 p.m. it starts and then it gets really busy,” Brudevold said.

“People just fly, there’s only one way in and out of here and I think they just get going and they don’t slow down,” she said.

Brudevold has contacted the City of Medicine Hat and she’s hoping the city will conduct a traffic assessment and install more permanent signage.

In the meantime, MHPS Insp. Brent Secondiak, says all residents in any part of the city are encouraged to report instances of speeding to the police.

“I would encourage the public if they have any concern in the city, we get them all the time, all over the city to submit a traffic tip on our mobile app or call MHPS if they have a specific offender,” Secondiak said.
