Medicine Hat College to recognize the class of 2020 on Friday

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat College will be celebrating its 2020 graduates with a drive-thru convocation event on Friday.

The college says that this year’s graduates are particularly deserving of a special celebration, considering how their final semester was impacted as classes moved online in their final weeks.

“We are so proud of what our students have accomplished during their time here at MHC and look forward to seeing some of them back on campus this week as we recognize and celebrate their success,” said Kevin Shufflebotham, president and CEO of Medicine Hat College.

There are 545 graduates from certificate, diploma and degree programs in MHC’s class of 2020, and 106 trades students.

On Friday graduates are invited to the drive-thru pick-up, where they will receive their parchment, cap and tassel and other mementos. Graduates without a vehicle can walk through.

Arts, Education, Business and Trades programs graduates can pick up their convocation package between 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Science and Health program graduates can get theirs between 12:30 to 3 p.m.

Anyone who can’t attend will have their package mailed to them.

An official convocation ceremony for the class of 2020 is set for June 11, 2021 at the Canalta Centre.

Convocation Award Winners

Tyler Cassell was named MHC’s Student of the Year. Cassell was co-president of the Science and Engineering Undergraduate Society, and tutored first-year students. Cassell also volunteered with St. John’s Ambulance and regional science fair activities.

Nursing instructor Una Weich received the 2020 Instructor of the Year Award in recognition of her teaching expertise and caring commitment for students.

The recipient of the Governor General’s Academic Medal is Cassie Melenka, a graduate of the practical nurse program. The medal is awarded to the student with the highest overall average upon graduation.

David J. Carter has been selected as this year’s Honorary Applied Degree award recipient. Carter is a well-known politician, clergyman, social activist. and author. After a distinguished career in provincial politics, Carter and his wife settled in the Cypress Hills and helped restore St. Margaret’s Church and Cemetary.
