Survey: Albertans reject “no-fault” auto insurance

Jun 9, 2020 | 2:03 PM

LETHBRIDGE, ABA new survey from polling agency Nanos shows that the majority of Albertans do not want to move to a no-fault insurance model.

In the broadest terms, no-fault insurance means that drivers are paid by their insurance company for losses, regardless of who caused the collision. The ability of drivers to sue for damages is often limited.

Of the 501 people who were consulted, 61 per cent preferred an at-fault system for automobile insurance than no-fault

69 per cent said they trusted a judge or the courts to determine what is fair compensation for a victim seriously injured by an impaired driver.

“The results from this survey are quite clear. Albertans much more prefer an ‘at-fault’ insurance system where innocent parties retain the right to sue for compensation” says Nik Nanos, Founder and Chief Data Scientist of Nanos Research.

“They trust the courts to make fair decisions and value their ability to choose medical providers as opposed to having insurance companies or the government appointing a medical provider.”

Approximately 70 per cent of respondents would want a medical provider of their choice to make decisions about their recovery and compensation if they were injured in a collision.
