CHAT 94.5’s Jim Duce announces retirement after 50 years behind the mic

MEDICINE HAT, AB – He’s a voice you grew up with, and after 50 years behind the mic, Jim Duce made a big announcement Friday morning.

The morning man on Chat 94.5 announced his retirement and will have his last Jim & Jesse morning show on Friday, June 26.

Jim has woken up at the crack of dawn for the last 46 years and has been part of the Chat family for 47.

He joked he started in the business when he was 7 years old.

Jim’s other broadcasting stops before Medicine Hat included stations in Swift Current and Lethbridge.

Jim says there have been many changes since he first got into the business.

But the basic concept of radio, like being part of the community, and the word you’re getting across has always been the same.

“The highlight has been just the connections I’ve made within the community and the people that I’ve worked within many of the charitable groups all of that kind of thing. But definitely the connections of the people in the community that has been the most rewarding thing. And with the change of the world now with the way things are we had to get away from that a little bit and that’s the one thing I really miss already.”

He says events and community interactions are the magic of radio and so many of the great events like stampede, Quonset Days are just some of them cancelled for July alone.

“All of the fun things that make our community great are cancelled for this year anyway, and we know they’re going to be back. And when they do come back they’re going to be all that much better and all that much sweeter.”

Jim was a little choked up after the announcement, he says it’s been a great ride and has worked with wonderful people.

“I’ve really enjoyed working with Jesse, it’s been almost four years now that we’ve been doing the mornings together and we got such a terrific staff here.”

Jim says he’ll let retirement soak in a little bit.

But he plans to golf this summer, stay up late, and of course, sleep in.
