Daycares part of phase one services slated to open next week

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Businesses are waiting to hear more from the government on guidelines when it comes to reopening.

Daycares are part of phase one which is slated to open on Thursday, May 14 with a handful of other services.

Medicine Hat Chamber executive director Lisa Kowalchuk says child care requirements were discussed during a telephone town hall earlier this week.

She says the government is working with industry to create requirements for the number of children that can be in rooms, how people will be able to drop their children off at the centres, and what activities can actually be done at daycares.

Kowalchuk says we’re not through the risk element of the pandemic, so most rules in place now will still be applied during the economy relaunch phases.

“Because there were daycares that were allowed to be open to provide services for essential workers, we have a pretty good indication that they’ll be looking to those guidelines to continue on, no different than the workplace guidelines that we looked at for business owners that were put in place in March. Those are still the same standards that are going to apply now.”

Kowalchuk says there’s going to be a provincial town hall specific for childcare providers.

No date is set yet.

She adds during the town hall on Monday, the minister stated there would be funding supports for reallocation of budget dollars to assist childcare centres with some of those added costs like when it comes to personal protective equipment.

And there’s still funding that hasn’t gone through to businesses yet.

Kowalchuk adds the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy isn’t actually slated to flow into business accounts through direct deposit until Thursday, May 7.
