Otter Quest an adventure but aquatic mammal remains elusive

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Despite no confirmed sightings of a trio of otters which captured the imagination of Hatters in the last two weeks, the Grasslands Naturalists hosted it’s Otter Quest Sunday afternoon.

While a pair of bald eagles could be seen on the far bank of Police Point Park near where the last sighting of the rare aquatic mammals for these parts was reported, the two dozen or so spectators came up empty handed in their efforts to spot the otters.

But for Hatter Kerrie Gauthier, getting to hike around Police Point Park is always an enjoyable experience.

“I take every opportunity,” said Gauthier. “As soon as I saw the otters, this is an opportunity – we don’t see them much.”

And while the elusive otters escaped detection this time around, there are always critters at the park.

“We come down looking for eagles, we come down looking for moose, deer. I bring my children from my Montessori school down so we can investigate and learn about the wildlife because kids to get to be outside very much,” said Gauthier.

According to park interpreter Marty Drut, the last sighting of the otters was on Feb. 19.
