Medicine Hat College introducing program for women and non-binary individuals

Medicine Hat, AB — Medicine Hat College Continuing Studies are introducing a new program that will give women and non-binary individuals a look into the trades.

Erin Ferris, Medicine Hat College Continuing Studies Program Administrator, believes this is a step towards introducing more diversity into a male-dominated industry.

“A diverse workforce is a benefit to both employees and employers. I think everybody brings there own skill sets,” said Ferris.

Students will get to try electrical, carpentry, welding and plumbing based trades during the program.

“It gives these individuals a chance to explore the different trade options that we have at the college, as well as give them some safety training, academic training to get them ready for the workforce in either trades, manufacturing or warehousing,” said Ferris.

There are 10 spots in the program, they will be filled by women and non-binary individuals who have been out of school for a year or longer and are unemployed or underemployed.

The program begins April 1 and will run for 14 weeks.
