Natural gas outage resolved in Cypress County

IRVINE, AB — Natural gas service has returned to all homes impacted by an outage on Thursday.

40 Mile Gas Co-op confirmed to CHAT News Friday morning that all 50 customers without gas in Walsh and other parts of Cypress County have heat again after losing natural gas service on Thursday.

The outage occurred following a fire which resulted in a gas line explosion early Thursday morning. Nobody was injured in the incident.

At the initial outage, approximately 200 homes, primarily in Walsh and rural areas near the town, were without service. With an initial emergency gas supply brought in, the number of homes was brought down to 50. Additional emergency gas was brought in last night for the remaining homes.

A mechanical failure is to blame for the fire, according to Cam Klatt, manager of 40 Mile Gas Co-op.

“We have four valves that were compromised due to the fire on the site, so we’re going to de-energize our main line, which is the reason for bringing in a second emergency supply,” he said. “We will be de-energizing a six-inch line, which is approximately 30.4 kilometres long and it will be flared off, and once it’s flared off, we’ll have it de-energized to the point where we can replace the compromised valves.”

Klatt adds the goal is to have the line completely fixed by 6 p.m. Friday night.

“My crews have been working 24 hours a day since the incident has occurred to mitigate this,” he said. “We will work tirelessly until we are back 100 per cent in operation.”
