MEDICINE HAT, AB — Lottery fever has hit Medicine Hat.

On January 3, a record $70 million jackpot is up for grabs from Lotto Max, along with 10 Max Million prizes of $1 million each.

As a result, stores that sell lottery tickets have been busy in the coming days.

Hat News and Tobacco says they’ve had lineups at several points this week as the jackpot has ticked higher.

“People are excited, everybody wants a piece of that $70 million,” said owner/operator Kirby Eresman on Friday.

Hat News and Tobacco sold a $1 million winning Lotto 6/49 ticket in 2018. Eresman says they would be thrilled if they sold another winning ticket at the store.

“It’s a huge sense of pride,” he said. “We’re always proud and excited when one of our patrons wins something big.”

According to the Western Canada Lottery Corporation, Albertans have until 8:30 p.m. tonight to pick up a ticket for the draw.
