Serious incident resolved; man in custody

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A 27-year-old man is in custody and facing multiple charges following a domestic dispute in the city’s northwest on Thursday.

It happened in an apartment building in the 700 block of 12 Street Northwest. Police were called to the scene at approximately 4 p.m.

According to a post from police, a male, who allegedly breached a court order, had barricaded himself in the residence and refused to speak with police. Police also learned at the time a woman was in the apartment at the time, allegedly being confined against her will.

The Medicine Hat Police Service’s Tactical Team, K9 Unit, Crisis Negotiators and Incident Command Team were called in to handle the situation.

In addition to police, firefighters and EMS were on scene as well.

Residents of the apartment were ordered to shelter in place by police while they attempted to negotiate with the male.

After negotiations were unsuccessful, the tactical team entered the building and took him into custody at approximately 9 p.m. The woman was removed from the residence uninjured, according to police.

Police say the man is from Regina, and is facing charges of unlawful confinement and breach of a court order. He cannot be named until charges are officially sworn against him.
