Rosa Mary Lehr passed away on Monday, March 20, 2017, at the age of 91 years, beloved wife of the late Lawrence Lehr. She leaves to cherish her memory two children, Carolyn (Dick) Penrose, Gary (Elaine) Lehr and daughter-in-law Shirley Lehr; eight grandchildren, Drew Lehr (his son Paden); Hugh (Jennifer) Lehr (sons, Holden and Joel); Kyle (Gina) Lehr; Ryan (Lisa) Lehr (children, Nick, Leroy and Emily); Lisa Mook; Reanne (Joe) Hughes (daughters Miranda and Amber); Jarrett (Jamie) Lehr (children Mckenna and Nash); Rosanna Lehr; her sister-in-law Frieda Lehr. She was predeceased by her parents, Karolina and Otto Deering; her husband Lawrence on October 14, 2004; two sons, Larry in 1994, an infant son in 1944; six brothers, Jim, Gordon, Eddie, Jack, Reuben and Pete Deering; her sisters, Martha Salway, Freda Yanke and Esther Foulston. Rosa was born on December 1, 1925, at Irvine, Alberta. On January 27, 1944, she married Lawrence Lehr and they started farming on the Beny land south of Irvine. They had six horses, six cows, two pigs, sixteen chickens and fed the cattle with one horse and a stoneboat. In 1947, they were able to buy a tractor and Dad did custom work to be able to buy land. Mum said our saviour was being able to sell the eggs from her 200 chickens, and cream on 8th and 9th Street SW. She canned everything she could get her hands on: Rhubarb, old chickens (best meal ever), milk, cream, pork and Saskatoons. Our family never went without. 1960 – we moved to the new farm yard that Dad and Mum built. We now had electricity and a good water supply so we could raise more pigs. Mum continued milking and selling the cream to Purity Dairy until the age of 60. They started their new project called Lawrence Lehr and Sons, raising Purebred Herefords. In 1997, they received the Alberta Seedstock Producer award and in 2003, were inducted into the Hereford Hall of Fame. Mum could make a hearty and tasty meal out of nothing in a moments notice for Hereford folks and neighbors dropping by for a haircut by Dad as well as babysitting the neighborhood. Mum looked forward to harvest because she hauled grain in her blue grain truck and had time to read. In 2005, Rosa moved into the Teoda Lodge; she had decided she had cooked enough. She spent her time with her grandchildren and playing Whist. The family would like to thank the staff and all of Rose’s neighbours at the Cypress View Lodge for eleven years of loving kindness, respect and friendship. Later, when Mum needed more help, Lisa and Carolyn were there for her. Everyday was a labor of love. Mum’s saying was “If you walked all day behind two teams of horses, pulling several sections of harrows, with dust in your face, you would have walked enough for a lifetime.” Rosa was a beautiful, caring, understanding, loving mother and grandma, “our best friend.” Every time you see a ROSE, remember Rosa, Mum, Grammy. Lawrence and Rosa were lifetime members of the Irvine United Church.
The family of Rosa Mary Lehr would like to invite family and friends to attend a graveside service in honour of Rosa. The celebration of life will be held in the Hillside Cemetery on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. Anyone wishing to attend should meet inside the cemetery gates at 1:45 p.m.
