Alma Brekko (nee Brown) of Medicine Hat passed away at Riverview Care Centre on January 7, 2018 at the age of 91 years. Alma was born March 25, 1926 on a farm near Demaine, Saskatchewan. In order to continue her high school education, Alma took a position in the hamlet of Demaine as an au pair. It was there that her intellect and personality came to the attention of the school superintendent, who fast-tracked her entrance from the 11th grade to Normal School in Moose Jaw. After graduating from Normal School with her teaching certificate in 1945, Alma taught grades one to 11 at an isolated one-room school where she lived in a small teacherage on the grounds.
In 1946, Alma married Norman Brekko of Beechy, Saskatchewan and eventually settled in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan where she embraced what she considered her greatest accomplishment—-becoming a “career housewife”. In 1961, Norman, Alma, their sons Terry and Roger and infant daughter Sonja moved to a farm near Beechy. Four years later another son, Todd arrived. Alma relished the fresh country air and thought the rural lifestyle ideal for her children. For many years Alma and Norman wintered in Mesa, Arizona, but continued to farm until the age of 65, when they leased the farm out and formally retired to Medicine Hat. Alma was very involved with the Beechy Homemaker’s Club and the Palette Club of Mesa, Arizona, and was known for her tremendous hospitality, culinary expertise, gardening and sewing. At the age of 50 she took up cross country skiing, playing the bass guitar and oil painting and excelled at all. A fast learner, Alma soon joined her husband Norman and son Todd in The Rhythmaires, a local orchestra for which she played bass guitar. Alma was a singer/story teller, traveler, and above all, a devoted wife, mother, and grand- and great grandmother. Alma leaves to cherish her memory her children: Terry (Lyndell), Roger (Therese), Sonja (Wayne) White and Todd (Cedric); eight grandchildren, Tara (Steve) and their daughter, Isla; Tyler, Tobi (Seb) and their children, Sophie and Ewan; Chad (Sabrina) and their children, Eric, Colin and Adam; Chelsey (Mike) and their children, Max and Sophie; Mitch (Corrin) and their daughters, Penny and Sadie; Daniel and Zayne as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is survived by one brother Robert, three sisters Vivian, Jean, Freida and their families. Alma was predeceased by her beloved husband, Norman, parents Herman and Martha Brown; three brothers, Bernard, Otto and James and two sisters, June and Emma. The family would also like to thank Revera Meadowlands for her years spent there and are especially grateful to Dr. Hirsch and the staff at Riverview Care Center for the loving care she received there. According to Alma’s wish, there will be a private family service at a later date. As an expression of sympathy donations may be made to the Good Samaritan Society, 550 Spruce Way SE, Medicine Hat, AB T1B 4P1.
