It is with heavy hearts that the family of Nicholas Slootweg announce his passing at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat on Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at the age of 54 years. Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Nick and Winnie Slootweg; his wife, Debbie Siwy; his sister, Adrienne, his brother, Tony; stepchildren, Tiffany (Perry) Rasmussen, Karlena (Justin) Martinuk and Tyler Siwy; his grand babies, Ayla Martinuk and Brielle Rasmussen. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins as well as his mother and father-in-law, Bonnie and Hugh McDonald, Trio, his Safeway family and numerous friends. Nick was born July 2, 1963, at the Medicine Hat Hospital. He attended school at Earl Kitchener, Connaught, Alexandra Junior High and Medicine Hat High. He worked at Aberdeen Pharmacy during high school and settled into his lifetime career with Safeway as a general clerk and lead man for 39 years. He loved his job and put his heart and soul into it, always hard working and dependable. He loved playing hockey in his youth and riding his motorbike. Nick always made people smile with his fun sense of humour. He loved his family and was always there for them. He met the love of his life at Safeway in 2005 and died in her arms. He loved being outside and took great pride in his yard. He was the best lawn man in Medicine Hat and taught his son-in-law, Justin how to do it! A Celebration of Nicholas’ life will be held at St. Barnabas Anglican Church (in the hall), 635 – 4th Street S.E., Medicine Hat on Saturday, June 9, 2018, at 3:00 p.m. with Dr. Shane Andrus officiating.
