March 25, 1926 ~ August 30, 2018
Mrs. Eleanor Mary-Addel Watson, beloved wife of the late Mr. Harry Watson, passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat on Thursday, August 30, 2018, at the age of 92 years. Eleanor was born in Rat Portage, Ontario (now known as Kenora, ON.) to Eva Marie and George Thomas Lapworth on March 25, 1926. She had two older brothers, Alex and Edward and a younger sister, Mervena. At the tender age of 13, Eleanor journeyed alone by train from Kenora to Medicine Hat to live with her father, George. At the age of 16, she embarked on what she thought of as a “great adventure”. Seeing a notice on the door of the Dominion Glass Factory in Redcliff, advertising positions at the munitions plant, Defense Industries in Ajax, ON., she joined up. She worked six days a week in one of three shifts, filling ammunition into shells and was proud to become a “Bomb Girl” helping in Canada’s efforts in WWII. After returning to Medicine Hat, Eleanor met the love of her life, Harry Watson and they were married in 1946, enjoying 63 years together. Harry and Eleanor fostered many children and they also babysat many other children fulltime; many who still know her as their Aunt Ellie. Harry and Eleanor had three children, Sandra (Robert) Missler and their daughters, Angela (Bradley) Erdely and their daughters, Jenna and Maia and Andrea (Dale) Kocher and their children, Addyson and Lochlann; Robert (Deborah) Watson and their children, Zachary (Kassy) Watson and their children, Brooklyn, Charlyee and Ryker and Jillian Watson; Tammy (Randall) Watson and their children, Jessica (Byron) Richard and their son, Travis. Eleanor was predeceased by her husband, Harry William Watson; brothers, Edward Lapworth and Alex Lapworth and her sister, Mervena Harrison. Eleanor loved to sing, play bingo and play cards with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family was her first priority and she will be sorely missed. A Celebration of Eleanor’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Saturday, September 1, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. with Major Murray Jaster officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery with a time of fellowship thereafter in the Cook Southland Reception Facility. Memorial donations in Eleanor’s name may be made directly to the Women’s Shelter Society, P.O. Box 2500, Medicine Hat, AB., T1A 8G8 or to the Salvation Army, 737 – 8 Street S.E., Medicine Hat, AB., T1A 8M6. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting our website at www.cooksouthland.com).
