Arthur (Art) Hennes of Medicine Hat passed away on Sunday, October 7th, 2018 at the age of 87 years. Art leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Beatrice (Bea) of 65 years; three sons, Grant (Joanne), Blair (Carol), and Scott (Margaret); his grandchildren, Ian (Kim) Hennes, Kirsten (Tyler) van Mulligen, Trevor (Anita) Hennes, Anthony Hennes, Zachary Hennes (Montana Wright), Megan Hennes, Lauren Hennes, and Ethan Hennes; his great grandchildren, Dominic and Nate Hennes and Grayson van Mulligen; one sister, Martha Park; two sisters in-law, Lee Hennes and Eileen Fode; and brother in-law, Billy Gehring. Art was predeceased by his parents, August and Bertha Hennes; in-laws, Albert and Louise Gehring; daughter, Deborah Hennes-Makus; four brothers, Bernard, Ed, Rudy, Wall; four sisters, Hilda Lothammer, Tilley Seib, Wanda Tomas and Elsie Hennes; and numerous in-laws and extended family.
Art was born on October 23rd, 1930 in Eatonia, SK where he grew up on the family farm. He moved to northern Alberta to follow Bea who was nursing in Edmonton. Art and Bea were married on March 26, 1953 in Edmonton. They began farming in Eatonia shortly afterward. Later, in 1964, they moved their family to the Elkwater area. In 1979 they moved to the Seven Persons area and then, in 1989, retired in Medicine Hat. Art still continued to help his sons with their farms almost daily until he was 84 years of age.
Art had a love of sports and was involved in hockey, curling, billiards, hunting and senior slow pitch, which he played for 27 years, up until he became ill at age 85. Art and Bea loved to go on driving vacations and through the years they drove to all but 2 of the States and Provinces. They loved the adventure of seeing new sights.
Art was actively involved in his church and an avid supporter of the Gideon’s for many years. Throughout his illness he was compassionately cared for by Dr. Mastel as well as the nursing staff at the hospital and then at St. Joseph’s Carmel Hospice. Our family is so grateful for their empathy and kindness.
Dad had such a positive influence on his community, and he made a profound impact on the lives of all of his family. We will always remember and cherish him.
A celebration of Art’s life will be held at HILLCREST CHURCH, 3785 – 13th Avenue SE, on Saturday, October 20th, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Mark Bolander officiating.
