James M. Pritchard

It is with the warmth of the blessings received from his life that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, and great grandfather, James M. Pritchard. James was predeceased by his wife Elaine, parents Milton and Margareta, brothers Fred, Murray and Blake. James is remembered with appreciation and love by his daughter, Katherine (Les Lindeman) of Calgary, sons Malcolm (Janis) of Medicine Hat, Scott (Nanda Weicker) of Calgary and Alan (Deborah) of Plano, Texas. He is also survived by his grandchildren Jennifer of Edmonton, Matthew of Calgary, Hilary of Medicine Hat, Kelsey Lindeman of Masset B.C., Everett of Silverthorne, Colorado, James Lindeman of Detroit Michigan, Blake of Calgary, Abigail of Shrewsbury, England and Adrienne of Edmonton, as well as 5 great grandchildren.
James was born in North Bay, Ontario before moving with his family to Lethbridge at the age of 4. James lived in Lethbridge until high school before moving to Edmonton following the early death of his father. James thrived at high school in Edmonton and then enrolled in the University of Alberta where he met and married Elaine Forbes his loving wife of 54 years whom predeceased him in 2004. James graduated from Law School at the University of Alberta after which he took the position of Crown Prosecutor with the Attorney General’s office in Calgary. Later James and Elaine moved to Medicine Hat where he became a partner in the Stone Pritchard law firm. James enjoyed the practice of law with his partners who included Malcolm and Janis and was thrilled to be able to see Hilary join the firm now known as Pritchard & Co. LLP. His integrity in the profession and life was unassailable and is reflected in his influence as a role model with three of his children and three of his grandchildren becoming lawyers. Always active in the community, he was involved in the Rotary Club, served as President of the Board of Governors for the Medicine Hat College, President of the Medicine Hat Chamber of Commerce, and was elected a Bencher with the Law Society of Alberta for multiple terms. While a bencher he chaired numerous standing committees, was a member of the executive committee and was an advocate for the role of rural lawyers in the Alberta bar. He contributed much to his community and legal profession in a quiet, dignified and unassuming manner, being always the considerate gentleman. James was always interested in farming and ranching. His interest was sparked as a teenager when he worked at the Lethbridge Research and Development Centre (Agriculture Canada). The spark, fanned by his enjoyment of his dealings with his many agricultural clients, resulted in a farming and ranching operation in which he remained actively involved until his health declined.
At the request of James, a family graveside memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, we ask anyone wishing to honour his memory make a donation to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation, two Foundations he supported during his life, or the Canadian Alzheimer’s Society whose work is now very much in our hearts.
