Tettje was born on April 11, 1923 in Oosterend, The Netherlands. In her early twenties her family moved to Wommels, The Netherlands. She was the oldest of six children. On February 4, 1948, she married Jacob Wynia of Lollum, The Netherlands. Two months later, they immigrated to Canada, settling in the Granum area. Tettje was involved in the church, Ladies Aide, Calvinettes and was custodian of the Granum Christian Reformed Church. In 1972, the family moved to a dairy farm in Agassiz, B.C. In 1979, they moved to Medicine Hat, AB where she resided until her passing. Tettje loved children, especially babies, welcoming each grandchild into her arms. She enjoyed family celebrations, baking, sewing, knitting, crocheting, embroidery, reading, camping and her many trips back to The Netherlands to visit her family. Tettje had a strong faith in God. Other than God, she shared her love with her husband, Jacob, of 65 years; her children, Betty Burke, John (Carol) Wynia, Charles (Leona) Wynia, Shirley (George) Poelman and Nancy (Peter) Dykstra; nineteen grandchildren; forty great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Tettje loved her family and remembered them in her everyday prayers. Tettje is survived by one sister, Liep Riemersma and one brother-in-law, Douwe Wynia of The Netherlands as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Tettje was predeceased by her husband, Jacob on June 6, 2013; parents, Sjoerd and Akke de Vries; one son-in-law, James Burke; one sister, Ettie Agema; three brothers, Willem, Balthazar and Douwe de Vries.
