1941 ~ 2019
Mr. Laverne Clifford Jackel, beloved husband of Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Jackel, passed away at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Saturday, September 21, 2019, at the age of 78 years. Along with Betty, left to cherish Vern’s memory are his children, Shelley, Michael, Sharon and Mark as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Elizabeth; brother, Richard and his stepson, Steven Munro. Vern was born on January 26, 1941 in Empress. After finishing high school in Leader, he enlisted in the Canadian Army with Queens Own Rifles. After leaving the army, Vern drove truck and eventually became a welder. While semi-retired, Vern gained employment with the Medicine Hat News as a paper carrier. He married Elizabeth Stevenson in 1981 and they were married for 38 wonderful years. Vern enjoyed watching football, especially the Saskatchewan Roughriders, spending time with his dog, Max and was a member of the Pipefitters Union. Vern was a humerous, kindhearted man who made friends easily. He was a proud man who will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. A Celebration of Vern’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Friday, September 27, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. with Major Murray Jaster officiating.
