Fatal crash claims life of 83 year old man near Brooks

UPDATE

A truck hauling a horse trailer collided with a parked tow truck on the Trans Canada highway between Brooks and Bassano yesterday afternoon.

The tow truck was stopped at the side of the westbound lanes. It’s lights were on, as it was assisting on another call when the crash happened just before 3 in the afternoon.

The 83 year old driver of the truck, from Olds, died at the scene.

HALO air ambulance transported an adult female passenger to Calgary hospital with serious, life threatening injuries.

No one else was hurt.

RCMP say roads were icy at the time of the crash.

BASSANO, AB — One person has been airlifted to hospital by HALO following a multi-vehicle collision between Brooks and Bassano on the Trans-Canada Highway.

According to Brooks RCMP, the collision occurred at 2:50 p.m. in the westbound lanes of the highway, near a rest stop.

RCMP say two vehicles were involved. A caller on the highway says semis were involved in the collision.

The extent of injuries for the person airlifted to hospital are not known. It is also unknown if there are other injuries.

The westbound lane remains closed, while according to Prairie Sprinter, a local shuttle service, the eastbound lane has reopened, but is moving slowly.

Traffic in the westbound lanes are being rerouted at Highway 36, according to a release from RCMP.

RCMP say road conditions in the area are icy, and motorists are reminded to slow down and use caution.

Officers are hoping to reopen the highway in the next hour.

The collision is under investigation.
