Body of missing Calgary boater recovered on Lake Newell

Oct 21, 2019 | 4:01 PM

COUNTY OF NEWELL, AB – Search and rescue crews have located the body of a Calgary man who went missing earlier this month on Lake Newell.

Brooks RCMP were called about a missing boater on October 5 at around 8:15 pm after the wife of the man reported he did not return home. The man was last seen leaving the Kinbrook Island Provincial Park boat launch heading south towards Jackfish Bay.

RCMP were joined by the Brooks Fire Department, Alberta Parks conservation officers, South East Search and Rescue, helicopters from both Calgary Police and RCMP, and two civilians trained in recovery.

The following day, the boat was located against an island in the lake containing all personal flotation devices inside while his shoes, a jacket, and a vest were found floating in the water and on the edge of the shore.

Following a two-week long search for the boater, the body of the 45-year-old Calgary man was found on the floor of the lake over the weekend with the use of a remotely operated underwater vehicle belonging to the civilian pair.

His body was recovered from the water at 1:30 pm on Saturday and has since been transported to the medical examiner’s office in Calgary.

Brooks RCMP say the investigation into the man’s death is still ongoing.
