Shorthanded Cubs squad picks up a point in road overtime loss

Oct 13, 2019 | 12:22 PM

COCHRANE, AB – They were far away from carrying a full roster Saturday night, but the Medicine Hat Cubs were able to snag a point against the Cochrane Generals.

Ryan Davis scored the overtime winner to give the Generals a 3-2 victory, while Dawsen Savage had a strong night in the loss for Medicine Hat with 30 saves.

Medicine Hat’s roster heading into Saturday’s contest was missing a number of key players with captain Tavin Stadnicki and Tavin Straub both serving suspensions, while leading scorer Chandler Aleman was listed as a scratch.

Despite only dressing 18 players, the Cubs jumped out to a 1-0 lead just over a minute into the game with rookie Levi Schlosser scoring his first goal of his junior career.

Cochrane was able to knot up the contest at 1-1 before the end of the first however, as Scott Shugg struck on the power play for the Generals with 1:19 left.

Special teams would benefit the Cubs midway through the second period with Grant Forbes beating Cochrane’s Erik Garber to jump back in the driver’s seat.

Just as he did in the first period however, Shugg scored another late period marker for the Generals to knot the score back up at 2-2 by the intermission.

After a scoreless third period, the Cubs and Generals needed some free hockey to decide a winner.

Davis was able to bring the game to a close just over three minutes into the fourth period, potting his third of the season to secure the second point for the Generals.

Both Medicine Hat and Cochrane were 1-for-2 on the power play, while shots at the end of the night were tied at 33-33 each.

Holding a record of 2-2-1 to begin the HJHL season, the Cubs have earned points in three of their last four games and hold the Southern Division’s fifth spot with five points.

A brand new opponent to the Cubs will visit the Kinplex on Sunday afternoon, as Medicine Hat hosts the newly-formed Rocky Rams at 2:15 pm.
