TSB deploys investigator to train derailment west of Barnwell

BARNWELL, AB – The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has sent out an investigator to the site of a CP Rail train derailment near Lethbridge.

The incident was first reported shortly after 6:00 a.m. this morning (Oct. 11).

The derailment led to the closure of westbound Highway 3 between Range Road 180 and Range Road 181, west of Barnwell.

Shortly after 8:00 a.m., an on-site detour using the eastbound Highway 3 lanes from Range Road 180-181 had been set up for drivers. Westbound traffic on Highway 3 near Range Road 181 is reduced to one lane and motorists had to reduce their speed in the area.

According to the M.D. of Taber Regional Fire Service – Station 4 & 7 Taber/Barnwell, approximately 25 bulk container cars derailed.

According to the fire service, there is no environmental hazard of risk to the general public.

No injuries have been reported.
